Ahmed小档案
Ahmed Ahmed, an Egyptian-American comic who has appeared on MTV, Comedy Central, ABC and PBS, recently won the Richard Pryor Award for the comedian who best follows in Pryor's footsteps.
Pryor retired in 1986 after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He was known for hard-edged comedy that confronted and challenged racial stereotypes, particularly against African Americans. Pryor, who had a central role in selecting Ahmed, has said that Arab American males now face more discrimination, stereotyping, suspicion and hostility than blacks.
Ahmed jokes that his dating life is limited, because “I only attract white women who want to piss off their parents."
He doesn't make airport reservations often, he says, because when airline reservationists see his name, they tell him he must arrive at the airport "a month and a half early." Instead of asking if he has any special dietary requirements, the airline staff makes sure he doesn't have access to utensils that could be used as weapons. "All my meals always come pre-cut.”
